Phrase Writing (Phraseography)
Phraseography is writing two or more words together without lifting the pen (e.g. "I thank you", "as well as", "of the").
Overview
High speed in stenography (80 to 120+ WPM) is impossible if every single word is written separately. Pitman phraseography joins frequent collocations together smoothly.
Key Rules to Remember
- ✓Phrases must be easy to write, easy to read, and naturally associated.
- ✓The first word in a phrase determines the position of the entire outline.
- ✓Common phrases: "I am", "you may", "to be", "it will be", "as well as".

The first stroke of a phrase takes the natural position of its first word (e.g. "I thank you" starts in the first position above the line).
